| I've been wanting to post for a long while now but my life as a newly graduated teacher has caught up to me. Last Sunday, Jason and I spent the whole day together going here, going there...pretty much going everywhere from Coquitlam, to North Van, West Van, Downtown, Port Moody and back to Coquitlam. Great times! Great times! After Church in the morning, we had lunch at Trolls (great restaurant), went to Light House Park (very romantic! :)! ), MEC (very "us" cause we love the great outdoors), Steamrollers (super delish and nutrish!), driving (I was learning how to drive standard), New Port Village (gelato at its best in the Tri-Cities) and finally Rocky Point, where I received a call from the Coquitlam School Board regarding a TOC position the following day. I was to teach at Dr. Charles Best Secondary for the French Immersion program. There were no details about what subject areas or grade but I took the job anyway. It wasn't until I arrived at school that I learned I was teaching Français 9 (x2) and Communications. I was informed that the previous teacher had left the school entirely to teach at another district, which explained why this teacher left next to nothing for me to teach. There was pretty much nothing prepared; I had to plan and create everything from scratch. Moreover, as most kids do, they made my first couple days as a TOC very challenging. In fact, the whole week was rather tough; not only did I have to work extra hard to find something to teach the students, but they are also grade 9 students who still haven't learnt what it means to be in High School. The previous teacher also didn't challenge or discipline them. Coming in to teach them and being very disciplinary, the students did all kinds of things to test me and push my buttons. I stood my ground but I went home everyday waiting for the week to end and exhausted. I was told that the position was open but based on my first couple days, there was no way I was going to take this position. As the week went on, I saw all the possible pros of taking this position, including an incredibly friendly, fun and supportive staff. I thought long and hard this past week and I've finally concluded that I'm going to apply for the position on Monday. The students have even actually started cooperating, which has made it easier to consider taking the job. Who knew! | ||||||
